Curriculum Areas

The School curriculum is organised as follows:

EYFS: Nursery and Reception follow the revised Early Years Curriculum (2012)

Key Stage 1 and 2:

English: We are using the new English Curriculum, with coverage of different text types through using quality first texts. We also make use of Storytelling Schools and Talk for Writing approaches, and are using these strategies from reception to year 6 to improve reading and writing across the school

Here at Weston we follow the Letters and Sounds scheme for phonics.

Maths: We are using the new Maths Curriculum and have begun introducing Singapore Maths in Years 1,2,3  and Year 4 also this September.

Science: Units of work are taught each half term focusing on enquiry based skills, investigations and application of understanding.

Computing: Units are taught in every class each half term. We take units from the Rising Stars scheme, which covers all the key skills and objectives from the new computing curriculum. Children use a wide variety of hardware and software to develop their skills applications.

RE: The Lancashire RE scheme is followed across the school where the children the question 'What does it mean to be human?'. This idea is developed progressively through a question based apparoach, where children discover the beliefs and traditions of a wide range of religions.

Foundation Subjects (History, Geography, Art and Design and Technology): These subjects are taught through termly topics from Y1-6. The children engage in a broad and balanced curriculum and creative range of activities via the topics.

Music: Is taught through the The Charanga Musical School Scheme which supports assessment, clear progression, and provides engaging and exciting whiteboard resources to support every lesson.

The Scheme supports all the requirements of the new National Curriculum and is absolutely in line with published Ofsted guidance. The learning within this scheme is based on: Listening and Appraising; Musical Activities - creating and exploring; and Singing and Performing.

PE: Each class has two PE sessions each week. One session is taught by the class teacher with the other taught by a PE coach from Premier Sport. PE coverage includes: game skills, gymnastics, dance and athletics, as well as a wider variety of less common sports, such as fencing, golf and orienteering. Years 2-6 take part in half a terms worth of swimming sessions.

Outdoor Learning

Every class takes their learning outdoors for half a day a week or fortnight. The philosophy of our outdoor learning opportunities, is to encourage and inspire individuals of all ages through an innovative, long term, educational approach to outdoor play and learning in a woodland environment. Outdoor learning is an inspirational process that offers children, young people and adults, regular and repeated opportunities to achieve, and to develop confidence, resilience and self-esteem through hands-on learning experiences.
