Literacy

What makes an effective Literacy student at Weston?

A passion for reading and writing, an ability to think and work independently, an ability to persevere, an enquiring mind, a good knowledge of grammar, an ability to share ideas, is able to attempt new things and explore creativity.

About Literacy

We are purposefully empowering every child to write, speak and think creatively through a passionately taught English curriculum steeped in rich and stimulating vocabulary. All students are nurtured to read for pleasure and purpose whilst acknowledging the gift of reading as an essential key to all learning.

Literacy has a pre-eminent place in education and in society. A high-quality education in Literacy will teach pupils to speak and write fluently so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others and through their reading and listening, so others can communicate with them. Through reading in particular, pupils have a chance to develop culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially and spiritually.

At Weston, we use Read Write Inc. in Early Years and Key Stage 1 to teach early reading and we use it also to teach spelling across the school. We use a text based approach, to teach the neccessary skills in writing.
