Phonics Screener Practice

Hello Year One's,

I have attached a number of previous Phonic Screener Checks to this page in order for you to start practice reading over these next few months with your children.

The Phonics Screening Check is meant to show how well your child can use the phonics skills they’ve learned and to identify students who need extra phonics help. The Department for Education defines the checks as “short, light-touch assessments” that take about four to nine minutes to complete.

The checks consist of 40 words (20 real and 20 non-words) that your child will be asked to read one-on-one with a teacher. Non-words (or nonsense words, Alien words or pseudo words) are a collection of letters that will follow phonics rules your child has been taught, but don’t mean anything – your child will need to read these with the correct sounds to show that they understand the phonics rules behind them.

PLEASE download and practice reading some, if not all of the previous checks as this will really help.

Helpful Hint

When your child is sounding out and reading each word, if they come across a sound that is difficult for them to say or remember, then write the sound down on seperate piece of paper. Do this each time your child struggles to correctly sound out any phonics or spelling patterns until the you come to the end of the check.

Then once the check is over, you now have a clear list of phonic sounds that can be targeted and practiced at home..

Also have a look at the Useful Phonics Websites for Parents attachment below for extra support.

Thank you for your support.
